Pilates and the Energy of the Movement Brain
What is "body knowledge"? Neuroscientists are now saying that our intelligence is not just in our head, that we have brain cell matter throughout our bodies. Since, we as Pilates teachers, want to communicate effectively with our clients, it is imperative that we have an awareness and access to the "movement brain", which is a whole system approach to movement. This deeper intelligence is an earlier function of the brain which sets the context of "where am I", our sense of self and embodied movement, and allows us to discover imagination and creativity, rather than just "mastering" how someone else says to do it.

Marketing Strategies for Pilates Companies
Why the economic down-turn is an opportunity for your smaller Brand - cost effective marketing for Pilates organizations. The instinctive response during a downturn is to tighten our belts, to reduce spending anywhere we can. Often Marketing or "Brand Building" are the first to be cut. But that doesn't recognize the opportunities to build your brand faster than normally, and much faster than your competition. This workshop will explore methods to make marketing spends work harder, to learn how impact sometimes is of greater value than frequency, and follow up strategies to make their brand building efforts result in better business results.

Quality Pilates in a Club
Maintaining a Pilates studio in a high-end fitness club environment is a whole new ballgame compared to managing and teaching in a small, boutique studio. It is important to understand the culture of fitness clubs, the expectations of club managers, how to market your studio/program appropriately and capitalize on club resources, and how to manage your staff.

Effective Teaching: Organizing the Body to Move
Eve Gentry said, “Are you a teacher or are you a conveyor belt?” The Pilates exercise repertoire is the vehicle we employ to achieve fully integrated whole body movement. But what is the teacher’s greater agenda in achieving this goal? How do we teach a client how to work? How do we teach a client how to feel in their own body? How do we teach them to connect this self-knowledge to the physical world beyond their body? Using my global approach as an example, we will identify the elements essential to answering these questions.

Advanced Teaching Skills
Joseph Pilates designed every movement in his system to involve the ‘whole body,’ and to connect it in its entirety to and from its core/center/powerhouse. Do you move from your center in a truly organic, whole body, integrated way? Are you able to assess whether your clients can – and if not, why not? In this workshop we will utilize Pilates spinal and hip flexion and extension exercises to develop our visual assessment skills to determine whether movement is actually coming from ‘the center’ correctly and efficiently, and if not, how to correct it. The ultimate power and health potential that can be achieved through Pilates is only possible when this integrated connection is accessed as its inherent human design dictates.

Staffing Your Studio
As Pilates Teachers, one of the first decisions we must all make is whether or not to work as employees (or independent contractors) for a studio or another Pilates-related business. If we decide instead to own or manage our own Pilates business, we immediately commit to wearing several hats in addition to that of “Pilates Teacher.” In doing so, it becomes imperative that we identify the various roles and tasks required to maintain our business and keep it humming along. Whether we decide to take on these various responsibilities ourselves or choose to hire employees, independent contractors or outside professionals to accomplish these tasks, it is critical to plan ahead and establish related management systems well in advance. In this workshop, we will define who you need to operate your Pilates business as well as the various considerations involved in training and maintaining a well-integrated and productive staff.

Sherri Betz
Sherri Betz Teaches Alan Herdman's Principles in Action
Alan Herdman will not be able to attend the PMA conference this year. Due to a sudden, serious illness in his family, he is needed at home. Sherri Betz has accepted our invitation to teach in his place. Sherri has worked with Alan a great deal and will be able to convey the material he was going to present. Alan sends his best regards and regrets not seeing everyone this year. Taking the eight Pilates principles: breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision, balanced muscle development, rhythm, and whole body movement. We will discuss the meaning of each principle and how they influence an exercise sequence. We will decide in which order the principles should be introduced to the client and work out a strategy that would introduce the principles to the client that would not overwhelm them. Would it be necessary to adjust the strategy for different exercises on different pieces of equipment? Finally, we will take two exercises from the technique and demonstrate how, by slowly introducing the principles in an organized and thoughtful way, the integrity of the exercise can be enhanced.

By the same token there are few, if any pieces of apparatus as good at facilitating the body working in ways that will help overcome imbalances as the Wunda Chair. The wonders of the Wunda Chair are infinite…I hope this workshop will inspire you to spend many years discovering these wonders.

Pilates Mat Work: Doing the Work and Feeling the Work
This workshop will demonstrate the use of the Stretch Out ®Strap to facilitate a greater awareness of the Mat series. The beginner is overwhelmed with the physical strength required to perform the exercises. The mind can become preoccupied with the choreography, the performance of the teacher and other students. These mind distractions do not encourage the feeling of the movement and the exploration of the individual within each exercise. More advanced students often become less aware of new insights as the work becomes automatic. This workshop will help you develop a new tool to present within the repertoire that will assist each student at any level. Please come prepared to participate and to take notes.
